problems opening bookmarks

Post by rwad » Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:03 am

I am get the following error when I try to open my macro from the bookmark bar in a new tab: "Javascript alert" can not run macro on a non-HTTP(s) \File Page." I get the same error if I try to open the javascript as a script argument from Windows task scheduler.

Furthermore the macros don't run when I try to use tinyURL to create a smaller link (ie, from the javascript:function()... to a http:\\tinyURL...). It just hangs in the browser. I can only open them if I go to the preview.tinyURL... page first.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

It seems you are doing nothing wrong. Instead, this is a restriction of the current Chrome API. The extension can only be started from a bookmark if a normal website is loaded in the browser. So if you are at http://www.google.com you can start your macro(s), but if you are currently viewing e. g. chrome://extensions/ you need to open the iMacros panel and start your macro from there.

The same is true for TinyUrl: The normal link http://tinyurl.com/yk696yn does not work, because no normal website is loaded in the browser yet and the bookmarklet inside the TinyUrl link can not trigger iMacros. But http://preview.tinyurl.com/yk696yn works, because the tinyurl preview page is loaded in the browser. So at the moment you can only use URL shorteners that offer a preview page.

We plan to add command line support to Chrome as soon as the Chrome extension API supports it. At the moment please use iMacros for Firefox or theiMacros PRO/Scripting Edition for this purpose.

PS: The full iMacros for Chrome source code is included with the extension, so if you are a programmer, you can even debug this issue yourself.

Thanks for the quick reply. Im not a programmer, so I made a fix by creating a very simple webpage that automatically redirects to the macro file after 2 seconds. This lets me use Task Scheduler to automatically run the macro at specified times.

That is a good workaround! I added this solution to our wiki: Chrome command line support
