iMacros EOL - Attention!

The renewal maintenance has officially ended for Progress iMacros effective November 20, 2023 and all versions of iMacros are now considered EOL (End-of-Life). The iMacros products will no longer be supported by Progress (aside from customer license issues), and these forums will also no longer be moderated from the Progress side.

Thank you again for your business and support.

What choice is better to run automations in multiple threads

Post by dsapo » Mon Aug 06, 2018 2:51 pm

Hi Support:

I need to create a .NET application to navigate the same web site in 20 threads at a time in silent or hidden mode.

Our dilemma is what alternative would be the best in terms of performance and stability:

Alternative one: A Windows Forms application using the iMacros Browser

Alternative two: A Windows Form application using the iMacros .NET Component

Thanks in advanced

Hi David,

Good question!

One thing you need to be aware of is that both the iMacros browser and the iMacros WebBrowser Component for .NET are based on the same underlying Microsoft WebBrowser Control, which itself is based on IE, so there isn't going to be hardly any difference in terms of functionality, performance, and stability at a core level.

Another thing to consider is that it's not possible to have a single multi-threaded application that uses the iMacros WebBrowser Component for .NET, as per this FAQ.

It is possible to launch multiple concurrent instances of the iMacros browser (or any other supported browser) using threads and the iMacros scripting interface included withe the Enterprise Edition. You've probably already found the sample projects included with the Enterprise trial that demonstrate how to do this.

So, the question really comes down to whether you are fine with launching an external browser from your .NET application for performing the automation, or whether you want to invest more development resources upfront to build the browser automation engine directly into your app using the .NET Component.
